Driving the NC500: Confidence, Safety & Single-Track Roads

So, you’re excited about the epic views, quiet beaches, and maybe even a few Highland coos. But let’s be honest — the thought of navigating a campervan around Scotland’s narrow, winding roads can be a bit intimidating.

You’re not alone. This is probably the second-most common concern we see online after route planning:“Will I actually be able to drive this thing?”

Spoiler alert: Yes, you can — with a bit of preparation and the right mindset. Here’s what real travellers are saying, and what we want you to know before you hit the road.

“How hard is it to drive a campervan on the NC500?”

“I was nervous at first, but honestly, after a couple of hours I got into the rhythm. Just don’t rush and be patient.” – Reddit

Most people quickly find that the van feels easier to handle than expected. The key is to take your time. These roads weren’t built for speed — and that’s the beauty of it.

If you’ve never driven a campervan before, we give you a full walkthrough at pickup. You’ll get used to the width, the mirrors, and even reversing (promise!).

“What’s the deal with single-track roads?”

“It was the single-track roads I was dreading — but everyone was really polite and used the passing places properly.” – Facebook comment

Single-track roads are exactly what they sound like: roads wide enough for only one vehicle at a time, with regular passing places built in so you can let others by.

A few golden rules:

  • Always keep an eye out for passing places.

  • Pull in on your left when safe.

  • If someone lets you through — wave! It’s the Highland way.

  • Don’t drive in convoy — it blocks passing places.

  • Don’t panic if you meet someone coming the other way — one of you pulls over, and you’re good.

“How fast should I be going?”

“We aimed for 30–40mph most of the time. There’s too much beauty to be bombing around!” – Instagram

Exactly. Even if the limit says 60mph, that doesn’t mean you should be doing it. Stick to a speed that feels comfortable and lets you enjoy the views (and the sheep — they’re everywhere).

“What happens if I get stuck or need help?”

“Our van got a flat outside of Ullapool — we rang the hire company and they sorted us out quickly.” – Quora

At Advantures, we include roadside recovery cover, and you’ll have our contact details just in case. But issues are rare, and most towns along the route have garages that can help in a pinch.

“Do I need to worry about fuel stops?”

“Fill up whenever you can. There aren’t loads of petrol stations on the west side.” – Facebook group

Smart advice. Always top up before heading into quieter areas — especially past Tongue or Applecross. You don’t want your next adventure to be hiking for petrol.

You’ve Got This

Yes, the roads are narrow. Yes, you’ll be going slower than you’re used to. But that’s the point. This isn’t about racing through the Highlands — it’s about absorbing them.

So go easy, plan your driving time generously, and remember: every stop, wave, and sheep is part of the story.
